Hispanic Engineers and Scientists (HES) is a UC Berkley student organization dedicated to increasing the number of skilled latino engineers and scientists attending UC Berkly. During the last 28 years HES has helped latinos and other minorities attend and be successful at UC Berkley, as well provided acedemic and peer support for minority students.
Mission
HES seeks to increase the number of civically responsible Latino engineers and scientists who succeed academically, lead professionally, and passionately contribute to society.
History
In the early 1970s a group of talented Chicano students felt the need to establish a peer support group for Latino engineers. In 1975, they did so choosing the name La Raza Engineers and Scientists. The goals of the group were two-fold: to increase Latino enrollment in engineering and the sciences, and to build academic as well as social support among its members. In 1980, the organization changed its name to Hispanic Engineers and Scientists (HES) and joined the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) as a student chapter. That same year, HES planned its first Career Fair and Graduation Banquet. Since then, HES has expanded its outreach, retentions, and academic achievement programs. |
